Several conversations lately have been ones of women confessing. Have you ever shared something with someone that has been gnawing guilt into the pit of your stomach for weeks, months, even years? Afterward, there’s a huge sense of relief and freedom. It’s refreshing and healing, isn’t it? It’s the shedding of light into those dark crevices of the soul. But before we can be honest with God or another person, we first are forced to be honest with ourselves and the depravity of our own hearts.
The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9
To share is risky and vulnerable. Cautiously we take off the mask to be real. We allow a trustworthy person to delve into the cobwebs of the heart. It’s like a friend showing up unannounced. Dishes are piled high, toilets and floors need cleaning, and the dust bunnies are big enough to carry us away. The natural response is to be mortified that our house has been happened upon in this condition, but we not only let the friend in to see our mess, we invite her in to help clean it and hold us accountable to keeping it clean. THAT’s confession!
Jesus IS our intercessor and of course wants us to confess our sins to Him with a repentant heart. But He strategically places people in our lives to be His hands, feet, ears, and mouthpiece.
No matter how long ago or how far removed, those sin-cobwebs continue growing and wreak havoc if they aren’t swept out. If something is gnawing a hole in the pit of your stomach, pray, share, and let the healing begin. No doubt, He’s placed someone in your life who can listen and help hold you accountable.
And understand this, God already knows our hearts better than we do.
I, the LORD, search the heart,
I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:10
He knows our sin and the wicked state of our hearts, yet He chooses to love us anyway. That’s where grace and forgiveness come into the picture. Jesus paved the way to forgiveness. He can shed light over your situation that yields life! He gives freedom! There’s unexplainable peace! Let Him in and trust Him to love you, imperfections and all. If we were perfect we wouldn’t need Him, we would simply save ourselves. But Lord knows that’s impossible, so He gave Himself.
Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13
